BENGALURU: The Indian Space Research Organisation has clarified that its role in India’s space programme will not diminish as private companies and other organisations take on a larger role in the sector.
The clarification came amid concerns over the increasing participation of private and state-run companies in activities that were traditionally handled by ISRO.
ISRO said it will continue to remain the country’s principal institution for advanced space research and technology development, national and strategic missions, space science and exploration, and critical space capabilities.
The space agency’s clarification comes as India continues to expand private participation in the space sector. Manufacturing and other operational activities are increasingly being opened to industry as part of efforts to build a larger space ecosystem.
Private participation has grown since reforms were introduced to encourage companies to develop capabilities in areas including launch vehicles, satellites and space-related technologies.
ISRO has also been transferring selected technologies to Indian industry. The move is aimed at allowing commercial players to take up manufacturing and operational responsibilities while enabling the space agency to concentrate on research, development and complex missions.
The agency said the expansion of private participation should not be seen as a reduction in its importance. Instead, the broader objective is to strengthen the overall Indian space ecosystem and increase the country’s capabilities across different areas.
India is simultaneously preparing for several major space programmes, including human spaceflight and advanced scientific missions.
The latest clarification is expected to reassure scientists, engineers and other employees about ISRO’s continuing central role in India’s space programme while the country expands cooperation with private industry.
