BENGALURU: BRICS countries have backed stronger cooperation in space science and technology, with the New Delhi declaration highlighting the role of space systems in addressing global challenges and supporting sustainable development.
The declaration, adopted during the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, welcomed progress under the BRICS Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation, which uses satellite capabilities to support applications linked to development and environmental monitoring.
The grouping also highlighted discussions held among BRICS space agencies in Bengaluru on the long-term sustainability of outer space activities and the need to reduce the risks posed by space debris.
BRICS countries also welcomed progress towards expanding participation in the Remote Sensing Satellite Constellation and discussions around creating a BRICS Space Council.
Remote sensing satellites have applications in areas such as agriculture, disaster management, environmental monitoring and infrastructure planning. Greater cooperation among member countries could help expand access to satellite-based information and strengthen technical capabilities.
The declaration also reaffirmed support for the peaceful exploration and use of outer space. Member countries emphasised the importance of ensuring the long-term sustainability of space activities and preventing an arms race in outer space.
Beyond space, the declaration placed science, technology and innovation among the key areas for cooperation between BRICS countries.
The grouping welcomed efforts to strengthen joint scientific research and knowledge sharing, including a proposed BRICS Science and Research Repository. Cooperation in emerging areas such as quantum technologies was also highlighted.
The declaration also welcomed initiatives involving research infrastructure and major scientific projects, with the aim of encouraging collaboration among researchers and institutions.
For India, the discussions provide another platform to strengthen international cooperation in space and advanced technologies while promoting the use of scientific capabilities for development.
The focus on remote sensing, space sustainability and research cooperation reflects the growing importance of joint scientific efforts as countries expand their activities beyond Earth.
