HYDERABAD: BITS Pilani Hyderabad and the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Pune, have signed 20 memoranda of understanding with private-sector companies to strengthen research and development in defence and aerospace technologies.
The agreements were signed on September 22 during Defence & Aerospace Industry Day 2026, organised jointly by BITS Pilani Hyderabad and DIAT.
The event also featured a showcase of 48 indigenous aerospace and defence technologies, highlighting research and technology development by academic institutions and industry partners.
The initiative aims to accelerate the development of technologies that can move from research laboratories towards practical defence applications. Collaboration between academic institutions, defence research organisations and private companies is expected to support the development and testing of new technologies.
The areas covered by such partnerships include aerospace systems, defence equipment, advanced materials and other technologies relevant to India’s strategic and security requirements.
The event provided a platform for researchers, industry representatives and technology developers to discuss opportunities for collaboration and technology transfer.
Academic institutions have an increasingly important role in India’s defence innovation ecosystem, particularly in developing specialised technologies and training engineers and researchers.
Private-sector participation can help take research outcomes towards commercial-scale development and manufacturing. Such partnerships can also provide researchers with access to industrial expertise and testing capabilities.
